Eucalyptus oil is extracted from the leaves of a eucalyptus plant via steam distillation. There are about 700 species of eucalyptus plant but only 500 or so are used to make essential oil with the Eucalyptus globulus species being the most famous of them all. Firstly discovered and used by the Aboriginal people in Australia to treat various medical ailments, Eucalyptus oil now has become one of the most used oils, especially as a disinfectant and expectorant all over the world.
The main chemical compounds found in this oil are α-Terpineol, 1,8-cineole (Eucalyptol), α-pinene, β-pinene, Sabinene, Camphene, Limonene, p-Cymene, Camphor, Globulol, Citronellal, α-phellandrene, Aromadendrene, and Piperitone.
